Abundância relativa e distribuição de Loricariichthys spixii (Steindachner) (Siluriformes, Loricariidae) no reservatório de Lajes, Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil Zoologia
Duarte,Silvana; Araújo,Francisco Gerson.
The armored catfish Loricariichthys spixii (Steindachner, 1882) is the most abundant member of the Loricariidae family in the Lajes reservoir (22º42'-22º50'S 43º53' -44º05'W), the largest dam in the State of Rio de Janeiro State, but little is known about its biology and life cycle. A standardized fish sampling program in three zones of the reservoir (lower, middle and upper reaches), during three annual cycles: monthly in 1994/1996 and bi-monthly in 1997 was conducted out aiming to assess and add knowledge of the population structure of this species. Fishes were caught using gill nets (50 m long, 3 m depth and 25 to 45 mm meshes), amounting 160 samples. Water temperature, pH and transparency were registered at each sample to correlate with fish abundance....

Alterations on piscivorous diet following change in abundance of prey after impoundment in a Neotropical river Neotropical Ichthyology
Cantanhêde,Geuza; Hahn,Norma Segatti; Fugi,Rosemara; Gubiani,Éder André.
The goal of this study was to investigate the alterations of diet of a piscivorous fish (Acestrorhynchus pantaneiro) following changes in abundance of a forage fish (Moenkhausia dichroura) during the trophic upsurge stage in a reservoir. Fish samplings were taken monthly in the Manso Reservoir (State of Mato Grosso, Brazil) from March 2000 to February 2001 (period I) and from March 2003 to February 2004 (period II). The abundance of Moenkhausia dichroura in the reservoir was significantly different in both periods, representing 9.6% of the individuals in period I and 66.4% in period II. Stomach contents analyses showed that the number of prey species consumed by A. pantaneiro decreased from 41 prey in period I to 14 in period II. In the last period M....

Caloric variability of Corbicula fluminea (Mollusca, Bivalvia) in Rosana Reservoir, Brazil BABT
Bagatini,Yara Moretto; Benedito-Cecilio,Evanilde; Higuti,Janet.
The purpose of the present study was to investigate temporal and longitudinal variation of caloric density of Corbicula fluminea in Rosana Reservoir. Significant differences concerning the caloric density of C. fluminea were observed throughout the year at the three reservoir sites. The caloric density variation during the year was probably related to reproductive activity, which demanded higher allocation of energy in certain period. The food source used by this species might be an important factor in the caloric value temporal and spatial variation of C. fluminea in Rosana Reservoir.

Changes in diet of a neotropical cichlid in response to river damming Biological Sciences
Jorge, Monica Bueno; Vilela, Maria José Alencar; Suarez, Yzel Rondon; Lima Junior, Sidnei Eduardo.
Changes in diet of Laetacara araguaiae Ottoni and Costa, 2009 were evaluated in the Sucuriú River (Upper Paraná basin, Brazil) in an area with a small hydroelectric power plant, both before and after the formation of the reservoir, in order to answer: Did the construction of the reservoir affected the diet of this species? The results showed greater change of diet composition in the upstream section of the reservoir. It was observed that before the formation of the reservoir and the first year after, the individuals from upstream section formed a group characterized by an insectivorous diet. With the dam construction and habitat change we observed that aquatic plant material, sediment, and algae predominated in the diet. These results show the...

Colonization of the Corumbá Reservoir (Corumbá River, Paraná River Basin, Goiás State, Brazil) by the "lambari" Astyanax altiparanae (Tetragonopterinae; Characidae) BABT
Dias,Rosa Maria; Bailly,Dayani; Antônio,Rosimeire Ribeiro; Suzuki,Harumi Irene; Agostinho,Angelo Antonio.
This work aimed to determine which population features were important to the colonization process of Astyanax altiparanae in the Corumbá Reservoir. The species presented wide spatial-temporal distribution, caught in all months and sites. Higher CPE values were recorded upstream from the reservoir during the filling phase. In this phase, reproductive activity was intense upstream and moderate in the tributaries. However, a fall in abundance of juveniles was observed after the formation of the reservoir. Among the most relevant population features to grant a successful colonization were wide geographic distribution, ability to occupy and spawn in lentic habitats and feeding flexibility.

Comparison of diversity indices applied to macrophyte incidence-based data BABT
Evangelista,Heloísa Beatriz Antoniazi; Thomaz,Sidinei Magela; Evangelista,Luiz Roberto.
In this work, a recently proposed diversity index based on Patil and Taillie parametric diversity measure (or Tsallis entropy), Sq*, was applied to samples (presence-absence data) of macrophytes from the Itaipu Reservoir, Brazil. This new index was the value of the family of indices Sq for a specific evenness of a sample. Results demonstrated that the Shannon index and species richness showed expressively high correlation with the Sq*; however, the evenness had low correlation coefficients with the index Sq*, indicating that Sq* was particularly sensitive to rarity and species richness. On the other hand, the weak correlations of this index with evenness demonstrated that it was less sensitive to species relative abundances.

The goal of this study was to evaluate the concordance amongst three zooplankton groups (Rotifera, Cladocera, and Copepoda) and between the zooplankton groups and the environmental variables in the Luis Eduardo Magalhães reservoir, in the Mid-Tocantins River, Tocantins State, Brazil. Concordance patterns were found in relation to environmental variables, cladocerans, and rotifers, although values were relatively low. These results indicate that one should be cautious about the use of indicative taxonomic groups to detect environmental changes, where divergent results annul extrapolation possibilities and indicate the existence of distinct environmental factors controlling different groups.

Diet and dental development of three species of Roeboides (Characiformes: Characidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Novakowski,Gisele Caroline; Fugi,Rosemara; Hahn,Norma Segatti.
Lepidophagy has been recorded in various species of Roeboides. In this study we analyzed ontogenetic variation in diet and dental development of three Roeboides species (R. paranensis, R. prognathus and R. microlepis). Roeboides paranensis consumed mainly insects, scales and microcrustaceans, and the smaller individuals (<3.4 cm - SL) consumed mostly insects. Scale were only consumed by individuals greater than 3.4 cm. Scales were the dominant item in the diet in all sizes of R. prognathus. The diet of R. microlepis was composed primarily of whole fishes, however, the smaller individuals (<5.4 cm) consumed only insects. During ontogeny, exterior migration of teeth in the mouth started at 3.7 cm in R. paranensis and 6.5 cm in R. microlepis. As body...

Diet of a catfish before and after damming of the salto caxias reservoir, iguaçu river BABT
Delariva,Rosilene Luciana; Hahn,Norma Segatti; Gomes,Luiz Carlos.
This study evaluated the diet of Pimelodus sp., before and after damming of Salto Caxias, (waterfall in the Iguaçu river), as well spatial and ontogenetic diet shift. Surveys were carried out from March 1997 to February 1998 (before damming) and from April 1999 to January 2000 (after damming) inside the reservoir and adjacent tributaries. Stomach contents analysis of 682 specimens revealed omnivory with high degree of trophic opportunism to this species. Analysis of variance (three way ANOVA) for scores produced from Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA) yielded a significant interaction between the damming phases and size of the individuals (juveniles and adults) (F = 4.68; P = 0.04). After damming, adults exploited mainly fish, whereas the juveniles...

Diet of Bryconops alburnoides and B. caudomaculatus (Osteichthyes: Characiformes) in the region affected by Balbina Hydroelectric Dam (Amazon drainage, Brazil) Neotropical Ichthyology
Silva,Cylene C. da; Ferreira,Efrem J. G.; Deus,Cláudia P. de.
The study of fish diet and its interaction with the environment provides important data on ecology and behavior, as fish face varying environmental and food availability conditions. The aim of the present study was to determine the diet of Bryconops caudomaculatus and Bryconops alburnoides, as well as to assess its seasonal variation, within the area influenced by Balbina Hydroelectric Dam (BHD), in the Uatumã River (Amazon Basin, Brazil). Collections were carried out every two months from April 2005 to February 2007, using gill nets with mesh sizes ranging from 12 to 60 mm between opposite knots. Two methods were used for determining diet: frequency of occurrence and relative volume, which were used to calculate the alimentary index (IAi). Diet similarity...

Diet of two serrasalmin species, Pygocentrus piraya and Serrasalmus brandtii (Teleostei: Characidae), along a stretch of the rio de Contas, Bahia, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Trindade,Márcia Emília de Jesus; Jucá-Chagas,Ricardo.
Serrasalmus brandtii and Pygocentrus piraya are two common piranha species in the Barragem da Pedra Reservoir, rio de Contas. In order to identify the diet composition of the two species, monthly collections were performed at three sites between May 2001 and April 2003, using two gill nets of different mesh sizes cast at the beginning of the day and visited after 6, 12 and 24 h. The qualitative composition of the diet was analyzed by determining the frequency of occurrence. Comparison of the two species showed a higher relative abundance of S. brandtii (151) compared to P. piraya (55). The food items most frequently found in the stomachs of the two species were fins, fish and shrimp. Serrasalmus brandtii showed a greater feeding plasticity than P. piraya.

Distribuição e abundância relativa de cumbaca Trachelyopterus striatulus Steindachner (Osteichthyes, Auchenipteridae) no reservatório de Lajes, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil Zoologia
Duarte,Silvana; Caetano,Carla de Brito; Vicentini,Rafaela Nascimento; Araújo,Francisco Gerson.
The catfish Trachelyopterus striatulus Steindachner, 1877 is a very abundant fish species in reservoirs in Southeast Brazil, and its relative abundance seems to be increasing in several lentic environments. Despite of being a very common species, few information is available on its distribution and other aspects of ecology. The Lajes reservoir (22º42'-22º50'S e 43º53'-44º05'W) is the largest manmade lake for hydropower purposes in Rio de Janeiro State, where this species rank among the top abundant fishes, both in number and in biomass. Distribution of Siluriformes in a river under the influence of a small hydroelectric power plant of the Paraná River Basin, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Garcia,Thiago D.; Ota,Renata R.; Ferreira,Dhiego G.; Nascimento,Raul H. C.; Galindo,Bruno A.; Pereira,Larissa S.; Zanatta,Augusto S..
ABSTRACT When a river is dammed, impacts differ according to distance from the dam under consideration, and sites closer to the dam are more affected than distant ones. Damming a river changes the flow and landscape characteristics, which, in turn, change the hydrological, limnological and ecological dynamics, such as biological production, species distribution, and ecosystem structuring, functioning and services. This study evaluates the distribution pattern of the Siluriformes (catfish) fish species near a small hydroelectric power plant in the Jaguariaíva River, considering three distinct distances from the dam: upstream region, reservoir and downstream region. Samples were taken with gillnets between March 2013 and December 2014. The abundance and...

Do different sampling designs produce differences in the metrics of curimba, Prochilodus lineatus (Characiformes: Prochilodontidae)? Neotropical Ichthyology
Kurchevski,Gregório; Godinho,Alexandre Lima.
ABSTRACT Probabilistic sampling, a classical recommendation for unbiased data, has been often overlooked. Fish sampling in reservoirs, unlike most rivers, can be accomplished by a variety of probabilistic sampling designs due to few restrictions in the choice of sampling sites (SSs). We evaluated whether population metrics of Prochilodus lineatus differ between fixed SSs (do not change with each sampling trip) and variable SSs (change with each sampling trip) in the Volta Grande (VGR) and Jaguara (JR) reservoirs of the Grande River, Paraná River basin, Brazil. We used gillnets to sample fish at nine probabilistic fixed SSs and nine probabilistic variable SSs per sampling trip. We conducted 25 sampling trips in VGR and 22 in JR during 2011 to 2015, and...
